Doone Girls School

History of the school

In 2005, when we arrived in the village of Nyariga, Ghana, we learned that a group of illiterate mothers, known as the Doone Mothers’ Club, had scraped together enough funds to start a simple school for their daughters. Thanks to an incredible partnership with Whole Foods Market, we were able to build 3 room school house. The partnership with Whole Foods Market has allowed us to expand the school in Nyariga. The expansions include a computer lab, a water well, and bathrooms! We plan to continue to maintain and improve the school, as needed, to ensure that the Doone Mothers’ Club is the last generation of illiterate women in the village.

The school is the only public junior high school for girls in the entire region and is so well known girls walk from villages up to 10 miles away just to attend.

In 2006 we realized, after building the first room of the school, the girls were going to need ready access to water. Drilling a deep well was the right answer. It took hiring a geologist and engineers – but finally, nearly two years later, the right location for the well was determined; it was dug and is now in full operation. It is clearly the best well in the entire region.

In 2013 a computer lab was built. The lab was built in part by Whole Foods Market Team Member Volunteers. The Team Member Volunteers worked for three days straight to clean, plaster, and help paint the building.  This computer lab is the first of it’s kind in the Upper East Region of Ghana.
