Theresa pays one of the weavers for her baskets.

Social Entrepreneurship

The Blessing Basket Project is about one thing only - giving our artisans a helping hand out of poverty.
By paying our artisans more than anyone else, we alleviate poverty. On top of that, we do not want our artisans weaving baskets for the rest of their lives as a means of support. The Prosperity Wages we pay them provide working capital which they use to start entrepreneurial activities. As small business owners they become independent of us which enables them to live well above poverty without our help.

The Blessing Basket Project is a fair trade non-profit organization.
Do not confuse our business model with those of for profit companies saying they do similar work.  We pay our artisans more than anyone in the world by selling their products. We use the funds received from your purchase of a basket to cover our operational costs and pay our artisans Prosperity Wages which is many times more than fair trade. The way we handle your funds results in a proven model to poverty reduction.

Founder Theresa Wilson, left, travels worldwide to meet the weavers and ensure they are being paid by putting the money directly into their hands.

Revenue

Cost

  • Prosperity Wages. We pay the artisans up front and in full for every product prior to receiving it in the United States. Your purchase helps us recoup those costs and helps provide the working capital we need to purchase the next basket. There are no middle men, so the money goes straight into the hands of the artisans.
  • Shipping Costs. We want as much of the money to go back to the weavers, so we choose the cheapest means of shipping--cargo ships. Thank you for your patience as we wait for new product to arrive.
  • Administrative costs. This includes staff and liaison salaries, traveling to the countries, warehouse/office rent and utilities. For more information please see our annual financial report.

Profit

  • Profits from purchases made through The Blessing Basket Project are directly invested into the lives of our artisans.
  • Profits from purchases made at most Whole Foods Market stores are invested into community projects in the villages we serve such as schools, wells, community buildings and environmental projects.
